Maureen Ann Braden passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas, surrounded by those who loved her. She was 79 years old.

Born Maureen Ann Smith on August 6, 1946, in Leicester, England, to Hanna and Leonard Smith, she grew up as one of thirteen children in postwar Britain. Those early years shaped her lifelong values of resilience, practicality, and making the most of what she had.

​

In 1969, a night out at RAF Mildenhall changed the course of her life. There she met Patrick Eugene Braden, a young American airman. After their first evening together, Patrick accompanied her home and spent the night helping care for her son Ricky, who had come down with chicken pox. Their courtship continued through daily telephone calls from a local phone box, and on July 11, 1970, they were married. Together they built a life that spanned five decades, two continents, military assignments around the world, and a family they cherished.

As a military wife, Maureen became the steady center of every home they created. She raised her children, supported Patrick throughout his Air Force career, and met each new assignment with determination, calm, and grace.

In the mid-1990s, Maureen fulfilled a long-held dream by opening GB House of Imports in Lancaster, California, bringing a taste of Britain to the American West. Later, after moving to Texas, she opened The British Shoppe in Abilene, where she became known for sharing British food, traditions, and history with customers from all walks of life. Whether discussing proper tea, Cadbury chocolate, Robert Burns, or British cooking, she was always happy to chat all things British.

Following Patrick’s passing in 2020, Maureen retired and devoted her time to family, enjoying quiet days with a cup of tea, a cold Yuengling, games on her iPad, and visits with those she loved. In her final years in San Antonio, she spent her afternoons on the front porch with her daughter Renee, greeting neighbors, sharing stories, and enjoying life’s simple pleasures.

Maureen was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Eugene Braden; her son, David; her great-grandson, Damian; her sister, Julie; and her parents, Hanna and Leonard Smith.

She is survived by her children, Rick Braden and Renee Gonzalez (Roman); her grandchildren Christina, Brittany, Nikki, Lauren, Roman, Joshua, and Dana; fourteen great-grandchildren; her siblings Valerie, Steve, and Anthony Smith; and many extended family members and friends.

Maureen’s life was defined by devotion to family, quiet strength, enduring faith, and a gift for making people feel welcome. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
